Major *secret* revealed!

I'm letting a secret out.  A pretty big secret.

I've tried to keep this fact hidden for many years, however, when I confessed it to my friend Caitlin last night, she responded with, "Oh that's not a secret, I've known that about you for a long time." Well, praise the Lord for friends who know us sometimes better than we know ourselves and can see through our masks and see who we really are.

Here it is:
I love Martha Stewart.  I would love to be like Martha Stewart...minus the prison thing.
I love to cook and clean and bake and decorate and ORGANIZE and host parties and plan events and create pretty things and look at beautiful homes and table arrangements.  I have read almost every Martha Stewart Wedding magazine ever printed because I think they are stunning.  If I had TV, I would watch her show.

Martha Stewart is the reason I made it through a whole summer of house-keeping at a northern fishing lodge; she taught me how to perfectly fold a fitted-sheet and arrange bath towels.
Martha Stewart inspired me to keep scraps of fabrics and paper to create one-of-a-kind greeting cards.

And the "Martha Stewart" inside of me created a theme for gift-wrapping this Christmas.
Theme: "Brown-paper packages tied up with string" + Urban Outfitters clothing tag & bag

All these gifts were
wrapped using old gift bags or shopping bags, and collected/saved pieces of ribbon and fabric.  I spent no money on gift wrapping this year!

So that's it.  The secret is out. I love Martha Stewart and I'm not going to hide it any longer.

Shakespeare, you're very romantic, but I think there's more.

"What is the object or ideal of a future romantic relationship?" was the question posed.  "What do you dream love from a spouse to look like?"

Though not sharing publicly at that time, my highly poetic, wordy, and Romantic mind spun quickly into dreaming of the response, surprising myself with what the eventual outcome was*:

Let me not to the marriage of true minds
Admit impediments; love is not love
Which altars when its alteration finds,
Or bends with the remover to remove:
O, no, it is an ever-fixed mark,
That looks on tempests and is never shaken;
It is the star to every wandering bark,
Whose worth's unknown, although its height betaken.
Love's not Time's fool, though rosy lips and cheeks
Within his bending sickle's compass come;
Love altars not with his brief hours and weeks,
But bears it out even to the edge of doom.
If this be error and upon me proved,
I never writ, nor no man ever loved.
(Shakespeare, Sonnet 116...one of my favourites!)

Is that true?  Is this what I dream of experiencing one day?

I dream a little of the Romantic, like Shakespeare's expression, and all-encompassing devotion, but love between man and wife more importantly as a prophetic declaration to our culture and generation of the eschatology reality of Jesus and His Bride.

Emotions true and beautiful, yes, but more so faithfulness and covenant that proclaims something of the transcendent.

The dream of love in my heart is not to only feel the moments of pursuit and excitement from a man but to join with another persons’ path and destiny in God that allows for testimony to come of our living and being.  It is to invite one another into fuller revelation to what it means to be loved and created for intimacy: to be truly known and accepted by our Creator.  To invite others into that truth with honesty and grace and to make unselfish room to grow, be transformed, and potentially train up children and impart to them our first-love: Christ.

If this standard is unreasonable, then with joy I embrace the love of Christ singly and wholeheartedly, content in Him who knows me and sustains me forever.

What a great gift then, that with the land-mark 25th birthday, people have stopped asking if I have any "special friends," or what my plans for a family are, or suggest where I might try finding some like-minded-available-males...the response continues to be a bit boring and tiresome for them.  I don't blame them, feel any hurt, or judge these loving people who care so much for me and desire happiness for my life, just a burst of thankfulness!

Truth is: I don't simply want to date or marry or have children.  I desire the fullness of God for my life, whatever that looks like.  There is much more to life and love than portrayed in Shakespeare's sonnets or the barrage of RomCom's on iTunes.

And with that declaration, there is a release in my heart and soul into confident love in Jesus Christ and trust in the perfection of His will and provision in all areas of my life!

* This is not where I thought a musing adventure about spousal love would take me, but I’m glad.  Very glad.  Though it is nice to think of that some day in the future, I am not waiting on baited breath and anticipating it as being the pinnacle experience of my life or fullness of love.  More than thinking of those questions, I want to spend time thinking, meditating and pursuing the knowledge of God that fills me with love for Jesus that is greater than any earthly experience.

Luke18 Project, Winnipeg: Fall Newsletter

I know everyone was greatly anticipating the posting of my first newsletter with Luke18 Project, Winnipeg...
And the wait is over!

Here is the first newsletter for the work that I am doing through Sanctuary House of Prayer on the campuses of University of Winnipeg and the University of Manitoba. It contains information about who we are and what we are doing, as well as how people can get involved. There is not much in terms of personal news in this newsletter, so you will just have to keep up with me on the blog and on twitter: @janneybeauty.

Thanks for your support and your interest.

Dawn

As the sun rises
the fog burns away
and the surface is
revealed mirror-clear
reflection gently broken
by the haunting call of beauty

The Sun-path burns
blazing to my heart
stinging my eyes
and piercing the sleeping shroud
It's a new day; brilliant
Mercy on the wings of the dawn

I settle here my home
and all the shadows flee away
the light holds my heart
and dances awake my eyes
The melody sways the boughs
and life rushes to join

The time of our lives

The temptation is sometimes present to complain about being single and wish life were different, but I had a week away that helped to remind me that I there is nothing I would rather have right now then the life I am living.  During this season of chosen singleness and consecration, there is a certain freedom that liberates my heart like nothing else, knowing what the clear boundaries are and allowing me to just drop everything I'm doing and take a spontaneous vacation to Kansas City with a girlfriend!  When else would I be able to do that?  Within 12 hours of a phone call from Christina, we were on the road heading to Kansas City for a weekend in the prayer room and shopping before she went for an interview Monday morning.

Undeniably, this was a God-ordained thing, as the timing worked out perfectly and all the details along the way fell into place including the exact money I needed to fund this trip, a place to stay for free, and a the chance to spend quality time with a kindred spirit.  Time in the prayer room was refreshing and invigorating to my spirit and heart, and the shopping excursions, coffee dates, and meals out were a sabbatical for my mind and emotions.  Laughter and fun is truly some of the best medicine, which I had plenty of, and a strong dose of scripture and the presence of Jesus mixed together into a powerful weekend of memories and encouragement.

Panera - an all-time favourite!
Shopping at the Plaza
Enjoying the sun at the plaza and taking pics

Heading into the Awakening Service Saturday night

To Christina:  Thanks for making the most of this time of our lives!

my TOMS

Sitting on the back dock at camp, texting with my Mom one early morning this May.

I have been a fan of TOMS shoes for quite awhile, and now that they are becoming very popular (seen in most fashion magazines, ads on the internet, and in fundraiser events with celebrities all over the world), I just wanted to say I will continue to be a huge fan and supporter but not because of the hype they are getting.

The fact aside that I think they're really cute shoes, it's the mission of the company that holds my heart.  The TOMS slogan, "One for One," sums it up - purchase one pair of shoes, and a pair of shoes will be given to a child in need.  Simple.  Beautiful.

I needed to be reminded of that.

I spent some time out with friends from SHOP at the Guse farm a couple weeks back, and while a group played soccer and the kids were running around the yard, I grabbed my camera and took some shots.  Seeing the beautiful smiles and hearing the joyful sound of laughter, I was reminded of why I wear these shoes.  It's about letting a kid be a kid who just runs around carefree.

I think it was little Anna who begged to use my iPhone to take photos too, especially of me taking pictures!  I think we have another photographer on our hands.

Check out http://www.toms.com/ and http://www.tomsshoes.ca/ for more info and to order your own pair that will help give a smile to a child in need.
